HIPPI (High-Performance Parallel Interface)
Serial HIPPI, a later version of HIPPI, is designed for networks up to 10 kilometers using optical fiber cable. An even faster technology is HIPPI-6400, which promises up to 6.4 Gbps . (See the table that follows.)
HIPPI defines interfaces at the physical layer (layer 1) and for part of the data-link control ( DLC ) (layer 2) levels of the Open Systems Interconnection ( OSI ) communications model. In addition to the standard HIPPI specification, there are working papers for proposed standards for related aspects of using HIPPI at the application level.
The following table summarizes HIPPI technologies.
HIPPI Technology | Speed | Maximum Distance | Physical Medium |
---|---|---|---|
HIPPI-800 | 800 Mbps (100 megabytes per second) | 25 meters | One 50-pair twisted pair copper wire |
HIPPI-1600 | 1600 Mbps (200 Mbytes per second) | 25 meters | Two 50-pair twisted pair copper wire |
